Job Description:
Hourly Rate: $15/Non-Degreed or $20/Degreed-Bachelor's or Higher
Days: As needed Primary Purpose: AVID tutors play a crucial role in
helping students reach their full potential by leading
collaborative, subject-specific tutorial groups that foster
independent learning and peer support through Socratic questioning
and peer-learning techniques. AVID, or Advancement Via Individual
Determination, is a college readiness elective designed to close
opportunity gaps for students in the academic middle who aspire to
attend college and benefit from additional academic support. Under
the supervision of the principal, AVID Coordinator, and AVID
elective teacher, AVID Tutors assist identified students in
developing academic skills, promoting higher standards of
achievement, and fostering habits of mind that increase
postsecondary options upon high school graduation. What sets AVID
Tutors apart from other tutors or instructional aides is their
specialized training in AVID strategies, which are aimed at
enhancing academic performance and preparing students for college
success. In this role, AVID Tutors also serve as mentors and role
models, supporting students enrolled in advanced courses with the
academic tools and guidance they need to succeed. Qualifications:
Education/Certification: Current college student or college
graduate or have completed at least six college hours Special
Knowledge/Skills: Interest in scaffolding student learning using
questioning and collaboration techniques Highly organized with
attention to detail Excellent writing skills Strong analytical and
problem-solving skills Ability to communicate constructively and
effectively Ability to establish and maintain a trusting and
productive working relationship with students and staff AVID
Tutoring is: Structured: A process of repeatable steps allows for
consistency across models; teachers, tutors, and students are
trained on, reflective of, and continually coached in that process.
Student-Centered and Safe: All tutorial models are built on a
foundation of relational capacity so that students feel supported
while seeking solutions. Inquiry-Based: Tutors and peers ask
higher-order questions instead of offering answers. Collaborative:
Peers use their collective agency to resolve points of confusion
and support each other. Equitable: Defined roles and
responsibilities ensure equal participation. Metacognitive:
Students identify where they are confused, and then summarize their
new learning and reflect on the process. Major Responsibilities and
Duties 1. Become familiar with the AVID 10-Step tutorial process.
2. Participate in all required trainings, professional development
sessions, and meetings. 3. Tutor students in small study groups,
assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text
notes they have collected in their AVID binders. 4. Determine key
concepts that need to be taught or retaught based on student notes
and discussions. 5. Facilitate student learning in a challenging,
yet supportive, tutoring environment. 6. Evaluate student binders,
including calendars, class notes, and textbook materials. 7. Assist
in all subject areas, familiarizing yourself with AVID resources
and student materials. 8. Become familiar with the textbooks and
materials used by AVID students. 9. Set an example of personal
excellence, organization, and high expectations for AVID students
to follow. 10. Work with students in any phase of the writing
process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
11. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID
coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of
concern. 12. Facilitate collaborative tutorial sessions where
students engage in peer learning and discuss class and text notes.
13. Identify key concepts for focus in tutorials based on student
worksheets, notes, and discussions. 14. Guide students toward
independent learning by using strategies for success. 15. Foster a
positive, respectful AVID classroom atmosphere, acknowledging
individual student growth. Other 16. Follow all district and campus
rules and guidelines. 17. Follow district safety protocols and
